What’s the Difference and Which Should Beginners Choose?
One of the most common questions I hear from beginners is “What is the difference between tarot cards and oracle cards?” At first glance, they can look very similar. Both are used for guidance, intuition and self-reflection, and both can offer incredibly insightful readings. But underneath, tarot and oracle cards work quite differently. If you are just beginning your journey, understanding the difference can help you choose the system that feels right for you.
What Are Tarot Cards?
Tarot is a structured card system made up of 78 cards divided into:
the Major Arcana
the Minor Arcana.
The Major Arcana cards represent major life themes, spiritual lessons and important turning points, while the Minor Arcana focuses more on everyday experiences, emotions, challenges and situations. Most modern tarot decks are based on the Rider-Waite-Smith system first published in 1909. This deck transformed tarot because the Minor Arcana cards were fully illustrated with symbolic scenes rather than simple suit symbols alone, making the meanings far easier to interpret visually. Because of this, many beginner-friendly tarot decks still follow the Rider-Waite structure today.
Tarot tends to have:
a clearer framework
established meanings
traditional symbolism
deeper long-term study potential.
This is one reason many people eventually fall deeply in love with tarot — there is always more to learn, I’m still learning after some 30 plus years!!
What Are Oracle Cards?
Oracle cards are usually more free-flowing and intuitive. Unlike tarot, oracle decks do not follow one fixed structure. Every creator designs their oracle deck differently, meaning:
the number of cards can vary
meanings are unique to the deck
themes can range from angels and crystals to affirmations, animals or spiritual guidance.
Oracle cards are often seen as gentler and easier for complete beginners because the messages are usually written more directly.
For example, an oracle card may simply say:
Trust
Healing
Let Go
New Beginnings.
This can feel less intimidating than learning tarot symbolism at first.
So Which Is Better for Beginners?
Honestly, there is no right or wrong answer. Some people connect instantly with tarot because they enjoy symbolism, structure and deeper interpretation. Others prefer oracle cards because they feel softer, more intuitive and emotionally reassuring.
In my experience, many readers eventually use both together.
Tarot often provides:
deeper detail
layered symbolism
clearer storytelling.
Oracle cards often provide:
emotional guidance
supportive messages
intuitive reassurance.
The two systems complement each other beautifully.
My Personal Advice for Beginners
If you are hoping to properly learn tarot over time, I usually recommend beginning with a Rider-Waite style tarot deck because:
most books and courses teach Rider-Waite meanings
most YouTube tutorials reference Rider-Waite symbolism
it builds strong foundations for future decks.
A beginner-friendly deck such as one of the following can make the learning process feel much less overwhelming:
If you feel nervous about tarot or simply want gentle daily guidance, oracle cards can also be a wonderful place to begin. There is absolutely no rule saying you must choose one or the other.
Can You Use Tarot and Oracle Cards Together?
Absolutely.
Many readers use oracle cards alongside tarot readings to add an extra layer of insight or emotional support. For example:
tarot may show the situation itself
oracle cards may offer guidance on how to approach it emotionally or spiritually.
This combination can create beautifully balanced readings.
Tarot and Oracle Cards Are Both Tools for Intuition
At the heart of both systems is the same goal, to help you connect more deeply with your intuition, inner wisdom and personal journey. It’s important to stress that there is no “wrong” deck if it genuinely inspires you to learn, reflect and explore. The most important thing is choosing a system that makes you excited to pick up the cards and begin.
