The Crowley Thoth Tarot Deck – U.S. Games Edition is one of the most influential and distinctive Tarot decks ever created, combining the occult teachings of Aleister Crowley with the extraordinary artwork of Lady Frieda Harris.
Painted between 1938 and 1943, the 78 cards were created by Harris under Crowley’s direction. What began as a Tarot project developed into an extraordinary collaboration, with many cards painted more than once as Harris worked to translate Crowley’s complex ideas into imagery.
The resulting Crowley Thoth Tarot is instantly recognisable. Harris’s striking Art Deco-inspired paintings are filled with layers of Egyptian, astrological, Kabbalistic and alchemical symbolism, reflecting the system explored by Crowley in The Book of Thoth.
The 22 Major Arcana – known within the Thoth system as the Major Trumps – incorporate traditional correspondences with Hebrew letters, paths on the Tree of Life, astrology, planets and elements. The deck also reflects Crowley’s extensive interest in ceremonial magic and alchemy.
First published commercially in 1969, the Crowley Thoth Tarot went on to attract a worldwide following and remains admired both for the beauty of Harris’s paintings and the depth of its occult symbolism.
